Help, My Mac Won’t Power On?

Is your Mac not switching on? Are you staring at a blank screen? Don’t get the hammer out yet or take a trip to an Apple Store before you try these tips. One of these solutions might just work.

Problem: Maybe your Mac has frozen or crashed.
Solution: Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. This will cut the power to your mac momentarily and attempt to restart your Mac

Problem: There is no power from the outlet/mains.
Solution: Make sure the power cable is connected correctly. You should see a orange or green light on the magsafe adapter if you are using a portable Mac. If you have a UK style plug, check and replace the fuse. Finally try using an alternative cable, for example an iMac uses the same cable as most kettles!

Problem: The P-RAM needs to be reset.
Solution: This is the last trick to try. Give it a go if all else fails.

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Press and hold Command, Option, P and R keys.
  3. Keep holding down the above keys while attempting to turn on your Mac. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. (if it appears at all)
If all else fails, then it’s time to call in the experts. You should contact Apple Support in the first instance, especially if you are still in warrenty.

We asked for Luke to come in for a training day with our staff since we were taking over the running of a Mac office and all had very little experience of using them. We found the half a day of training exceptionally useful. We were taught basic things, however we could already see that they would greatly increase our productivity and understanding of how to get the best out of using the Mac computers. The session was the best of both worlds of being taught the basics that we were lacking but without going too basic and wasting time. Will definitely be getting Luke back in again soon!
